Jesus often preached on the importance of servanthood, and before the Last Supper, He washed His disciple's feet in a final act of servitude. As seniors, we need to remember that the good work God has begun in us is never finished. There are always new opportunities to do His will and follow His examples.

1 Peter 4:10

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

How to serve fellow residents

• Offer physical assistance to others in need. Holding a door open, retrieving an item that is beyond reach and helping locate small objects are all tasks that may be within your capability.
• Look out for newcomers. New residents may take a while to learn the floor plan, meal times and how things are done. Remember that you were once new, too; a friendly mentor goes a long way toward making a newcomer feel at home.
• Provide encouragement. Each of us carries our own burdens, and while you may not be able to ease another's burdens, you can listen, reassure and brighten someone's day with a smile.

For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

How to treat those who serve with respect

• Smile at your meal servers and thank them for a job well done. Park Regency Thornton's restaurant-style dining gives both residents and wait staff a chance to interact with each other in a loving, considerate manner.
• Let the recreation staff know how much you appreciate their creativity and hard work. The activities, games and outings they have scheduled make each day special.
• Take a moment to thank the housekeeping staff. They work hard to ensure your apartments are kept just the way you like them.
